What's so special about using picture books when you're teaching someone to read?

Learn the compliment you can give when any reader doesn't know the next word-- including the earliest beginning reader! (You stopped when you came to a tricky part!)

Be prepared to say one of the most important phrases for all readers. (Now go back and put it all together. Newer readers = the sentence; More experienced = a phrase is ok.)

Start noticing how experienced adult readers use these same strategies! We just do them so quickly that we rarely notice it's happening.

Is your reader at the very first stages? How to Teach Your Grownup to Read is a picture book you can read with your child where you'll BOTH get comfortable with 5 important reading skills: 1 to 1 correspondence, self-monitoring, searching for clues, looking at the picture, and familiar reading. Better than a handout and something I wish I could have given my students when I was a 1st grade teacher. Just snuggle up and read together with the BEST illustrations by James Koenig!
